Monday 02/23/09 "Exploding the Limits of Education with Technology"

Tonight's Whole Class Group discussion on focused on digital learning styles and the features of Web 2.0 versus Web 1.0. In Web 2.0 information flows in two directions and it makes the everything more collaborative and interactive. Web 2.0 and it's many different applications allows educators to teach and learn in an interactive digital environment. With Wikis (means "fast"), a teacher can use the wiki site for On-Line Resource Lists, Group Projects, Peer Review & Editing for the writing process, post assignments, showcase student work, share best practices, and on-line notification for parents. Digital learning styles are self-directed learning opportunities that include fluency in new media which will lead to the more collective reflections.

Digital Learning Attributes:
  • Interactive - engaging content
  • Student Centered - shifts learning responsibility to the student, and emphasizes teacher guided instruction and modeling
  • Authentic - learning and knowledge acquisition takes place only when situated in a social and authentic context
  • Collaborative - Learning is a social activity
  • On - Demand - Students have the ability to multi-task and handle multiple streams of information

  1. We certainly are exploding the limits of education with technology. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Web 2.0 tools to make it into the classrooms in my school. It was great seeing how wikis and blogs were used in the classroom and how they utilized the 21st century child's need for learning in a social environment. I particularly liked the point that student's typically felt more purpose in their work knowing it was being posted on the internet and people beyond their teacher would read and respond to it.
